The PERI team and colleagues at the Global Initiative for Economic Social and Cultural Rights and Right to Education Project would like to invite you to attend the pre-conference workshop Finding solutions: What regulation for private education? scheduled for 11.45 AM- 2.45 PM on Sunday March 6th as part of the 60th Annual Comparative and International Education Society Conference (CIES) held at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel, Vancouver.

As part of ongoing efforts to develop a normative framework on non-State actors’ involvement in education, this three hour workshop will explore what regulations could be applied to the role of the private education sector both to guarantee its independence and positive contribution, and to avoid abuses and promote accountability. Key questions that this workshop seeks to address are: Under which circumstances and conditions should private actors be allowed to engage in education? Should any private actor participate? What are positive and negative examples of regulations and how can private schools be progressively regulated in countries with weak governance systems and facing several challenges?

The aim of the workshop is to stimulate a discussion on regulation and accountability and to work towards identifying concrete policy options. It is also an occasion for participants to familiarize themselves with the human rights standards applicable to the role of private actors in education and to weigh in on this reflection, the workshop will build on a previous workshop held at CIES 2015, and progress that has been made since.

If you’re interested to join the workshop, please register online as soon as possible, as places are limited by the organizers.  A one-off registration fee of 25 USD is payable via the CIES conference website.

Please do not hesitate to contact PERI directly if you require any additional information regarding the workshop or the registration process. We look forward to your participation in the discussion.
